Kutná Hora

Kunta Hora is a historical town center that developed as a result of the exploitation of the silver mines.  In the 14th century it became a place of royalty and monuments were erected around the city to display its status of wealth and prosperity.

Today it is most well known for the Church of St Barbara and the Cathedral of Our Lady Sedlec, who are both astonishingly beautiful and representative of their time.

While here, don’t forget to checkout the town center, the Gothic stone fountain, and some of the other smaller churches and chapels that call Kunta Hora home.

Terezin Concentration Camp

Located 30 miles north of Prague, the Terezin Concentration Camp held over 150,000 Jews in World War II.

While it was originally built as a holiday resort, it was assigned as a Jewish ghetto by Hitler in 1940.  Of the hundreds of thousands sent there, less than 150 children survived.

Today you can tour the camp with an expert guide to learn some of the history behind one of the largest concentration camps in the Czech Republic.  Once you are finished visiting the camp, don’t forget to pay tribute to the thousands of lives lost at the Terezin Memorial.

Český Krumlov

The town of Cesky Krumlov, located on the banks of the Vltava River, is a small medieval European town with plenty of character.

The main focal point of Cesky Krumlov, by which the town was actually built around, is a 13th century Gothic Renaissance castle known as the Cesky Krumlov Castle. 

Aside from the amazing architectural style of the castle, the castle is best known for its bear festivals that pay tribute to the line of bears that have been housed within the castle throughout the decades.

Brno

If you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the big city, Brno is where you want to be.

Brno is the South Moravian capital and combines a variety of distinct architecture, history, culture and nightlife.  The city was actually founded over 1000 years ago and today it has many institutions that directly show off its history and culture.

While here don’t forget to check out the Labyrinth Under the Vegetable Market, the Moravian Karst Nature Reserve, and the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul.

Karlštejn Castle

The town of Karlštejn is on many peoples list of places to visit because of Karlštejn Castle.

Founded in 1348 by Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, the Karlštejn Castle was originally used as a private residence and place of safekeeping for his royal treasures.

Today, the castle is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Czech Republic and makes for a great day trip from the city of Prague.

When touring the castle you can opt for a shorter or longer tour.  If you take the longer 70 minute tour you’ll see the Hall of Knights, the Imperial Place, the Chapel of St. Nicolas, the Royal Bedroom, the Audience Hall, the Chapels and Churches, and the Library.

Pilsen

If you’re thinking, “isn’t Pilsen a beer?!”, you’re absolutely right!  The town of Pilsen is actually where this beer originated.

Pilsen isn’t all about beer, though.  Pilsen is also full of more than 700 years of history and has the amazing architecture and buildings to prove it.

On the top of anyone’s list when visiting Pilsen should be the Pilsner Brewery but other popular stops include the Plzen Zoo, the Great Synagogue, the Historical Underground, and the Republic Square.

Dresden

Located just across the border in eastern Germany is Dresden also known as the Florence at the Elbe.  Located on the river bank, Dresden is a picturesque city that displays a variety of Baroque style architectural buildings.

Although over 80% of the historic center was destroyed in WWII, much has been restored to its original state.  Some of the main attractions in Dresden are the museums which include the Green Vault, the Royal Palace, the Panometer, and the Royal Porcelain Collection.

Along with the many museums, there are also various churches and religious sites to see throughout the area.

České Budějovice

Located in South Bohemia, Ceské Budejovice is the largest town in South Bohemia and is a great place to visit if you want to escape touristy areas and get a more realistic feel of life in the Czech Republic.

While there are no top sights in Ceské Budejovice, it is full of charming alleyways and is home to Europe’s largest main square.  Within a few km you can also the picturesque village of Holasovice which has also been declared a UNESCO site.

Olomouc

Often referred to as Little Prague, Olomouc is a historical and culture gem.  It has the same charm and character as Prague but without all the tourists.

Olomouc is home to a variety of universities and naturally offers amazing nightlife in the form of a variety of bars, clubs, and pubs.  If nightlife isn’t your thing, it also has many small cafes and even it’s own cheese.

While here be sure to check out the Virgin Mary of Snow Cathedral where Mozart once played the pipe organ.  Other places you should check out are the Catfe (a cafe with cats) and the Bouzov fairy tale castle.

Karlovy Vary

Often referred to as just Vary by the Czechs themselves, Karlovy Vary is all about the 19th century spa architecture.  Vary has some of the most unique architecture in all of the Czech Republic, and for that reason, it is one of the most visited places in the country.

When you visit Karlovy Vary you can follow in the footsteps of Tsar Peter the Great who indulged in many treatments here in the beginning of the 18th century.

Aside from indulging in a complete spa day, other must dos in Karlovy Vary include the Valec Castle, the Gotethes Lookout Tower, and the Nova Louka.
